A good defense can protect you from losing resources, troops, even control of your city. Here are a few tactics I've learned t help you with that after you break out of protection.
1. Don't Become A Good Target.
Hide Your Resources.
The most common reason for any attack on anyone is the fact that you have a big ol' pile of resources in your city left unprotected by your warehouse. Your warehouse only protects a certain amount of resources, so what will you do if you have overflow?
"Hide it on your market". Do this by placing a Sell bid with a high market price such as 1-2 sest per unit. Whatever amount you put up for sale will be the amount you hide on your market. If someone scouts you, they cannot see what resources you have on your market. If and when you need your resources again, just simply cancel the bid and the resources go right back to your inventory.
Be careful though, don't place the bid too low or our resources might sell. I've had that happen sooo many times and DAMN it's frustrating xD. I mean, yes you make a pile of sesterces but you lose your resources. Ehh... Just be smart about it.
2. Uncheck Heads-On in your Plaza.
Save your troops!
Please... You should have all your Head-On's unchecked in every city. This prevents troops from fighting back when you are being marauded while offline. It may sound nice that your troops defend your city, but trust me. It is SO easy to wipe out someone's troops when they aren't online, AND when you know what they have. Troops are harder to replace than resources are. Uncheck Head-On while offline.
PS - To do this, click your Plaza, go to Engagement Protocol, and uncheck the box next to Heads-On. You must do this for every individual city with a plaza.
3. Truce Statuses - Use Them!
They ease your mind, and miff your opponent.
Truce Statuses are used when you are nervous about being attacked while you are away. If you are going to sleep or going to work/school, don't be shy to use one. They are not bad, and they do not make you seem wimpy no matter what your opponent says. Chances are they're just p*ssed about not being able to attack you because you were smart enough to Truce out.
They can also be used when you need a break from defending, because all you have to do is set one in action and they can no longer send attacks at you for 12 hours.
When you get back online and you still have some Truce time left, you can always "cancel" your truce. This doesn't nullify the fact you put up a Truce, it just ends your 12 hours of peace early. The 12 hour Truce cool down still applies here. To end your Truce early, click your character name scroll and alter the part next to where it says "Status". You can apply or end Truces here.
4. Movers - Also Useful When Under Seige
Be a ninja! Lol
If you can't defend, league mates are too far etc, or you just want to tick off your opponent... Use a Mover when an attack or attacks have been launched at you. This moves your city away from your enemy, as well as make the enemy's troops recall.
Be warned though, someone could just use a Spies to find your coordinates again and continue attacking, OR they could take a peek at any of your owned wilds and colonies to find your city coordinates. Once you seize a wild or have a colony, someone can just click on it and see the coords of the city that owns it. Drop your owned wilds and colonies in this city before moving if you want to take this route.
Only use a mover as a last-resort measure.
***Please Note****
You can easily obtain Movers and Truces by marauding lvl 3+ wilds. You do not need to buy them because the more you maraud, the better chance you'll have a few handy when you need them. I think at one point i had like 50 of each xD or more.

These are all strategies intended on helping you defend yourself. Use them wisely. Ask questions about battle set up! Ask how to defend under certain situations! This is what a damn league is for lol!
YOU HAVE TO BE PROACTIVE. Got a question? Ask it. Ask it ten times to ten different people to get different advice for different styles. There is only so much I can spoon feed you. If you want to learn you have to KNOW what you want to learn. Most of us learn through trial and error, more error than success. But mistakes are a good teacher and a league is thereto help you through them.
