GENERAL PRESTIGE GAINING TIPS:
Queue as many troops as you can in the military cities, and then use a speed-up item. You should always have a troop speed-up available, and if you don't you should go get one from a WSC.
If you're unfamiliar with the WSC system, read up here: Click here
Troops/barbs give an increasing % of your prestige as you get bigger. By 1 million prestige, I'd reckon about 95% of further prestige gains will come from building these.
Marauding wilds is the only way to keep up with active players. Focus on doing the aglet quests when you're starting out, and then start building an army of equites when you are capable of it. Equites are the key to beating level 6+ wilds due to their massively overpowered annihilation sweep.
Different things give a different amount of prestige. See the "prestige gains" section here: Click here
Note that specs give the best prestige per hour, followed by ballistas.
That isn't to say that you should only build the best units for prestige though. If you build equites instead of specs, you will be able to maraud higher level wilds, which will get you more resources. Balls are nothing compared to onagars for attacking other players, etc.
GENERAL TIPS:
Barbicans are the only worthwhile wall defence to build.
Equites can't attack walls, or over walls, so be wary of using them in colonization attempts.

Next text comes from me ^^ lol.
Just a quick thing that I do each time.... Specs give you the most prestige per hour of unit building. I build those in alternates to my ponies. That's only if you have the spare resources to do so.
I also build my first two cities as mixed cottage/war cities and end up focusing on cottages until they're lvl 7-9, so I have enough ses to keep researches and troops building (tax generally at 30-40% depending on idle pop). Just in general, keeping things going is key. Whenever something is idle, you in effect "lose" prestige you could have had.
Also, I constantly have wall defenses building, mostly barbicans but I throw some traps and rockfalls in there too. Barbicans are more useful because of their hp bonus for walls though.
This comes from A builder player though... Obviously if you want to focus on military then do not follow my advice ;D. But it's nice to have a happy medium between the two. No military and all build = lovely little farm, but all military and no build = unsustainable infrastructure. In my experience.
